Specialty Parts for Jeep Off Roading
Because of what Jeep's are often used for (off road travel), there are many specialty Jeep parts that are needed. Many owners equip theirs with Jeep car parts such as roll-bars, taller tires, locking differentials, extra lights, and a winch to pull the vehicle out from the mud or sand when stuck. If you could name one thing Jeep is famous for, it is its uncompromised off roading capabilities, no other brand in history has produced the quality and quantity of off road capable machines as Jeep has. Considering the amount of off road terrain many Jeeps travel, proper Jeep parts are important. There are many special Jeep parts in Florida that make this off roading possible. In fact, the Wrangler is the only light-duty vehicle offered in North America with solid axles front and rear. These axles are known for their durability due to their overall strength and lack of rubber boots. The upgraded Rubicon model of the Wrangler is equipped with electronically activated lockers, Dana 44 axles front and rear with 4.10 gears, a 4:1 transfer case and heavy duty shocks. Another plus of solid axle vehicles is they tend to be easier and cheaper to "lift." This "lifting" increases the distance between the center of the axle hub and chassis of the vehicle. By increasing this distance, larger tires can be installed, which will increase the ground clearance of the Jeep, allowing it to traverse even larger and more difficult obstacles. Jeep gives its models that are outfitted to tackle the world away from the road a 'Trail Rated' designation. Here are some of the main components Jeep offers to make their vehicles 'trail rated'.
Command-Trac II: this supports the MP 1522 two-speed, part-time four-wheel drive transfer case. 2WD High is the usual driving mode, with the front driveline disengaged from the transfer case and power directed to the rear wheels. Selecting 4WD Lock via the electronic, console-mounted switch locks the front and rear driveshafts together; the two then rotate at the same speed and provide a 50 front/50 rear torque split, providing better traction on slippery surfaces. This transfer case allows for 2WD, 4WD high-range and low-range as well as neutral.
Quadra-Trac I: this 4WD system is all about simplicity. Quadra-Trac I operates in a high-range, all-time mode delivering optimum traction in virtually any driving situation with no driver input required. The Grand Cherokee SRT uses the Quadra-Trac on-demand system that drives the rear driveshaft and engages the front driveshaft when needed, either when slip is sensed, or with throttle anticipation, which engages the front prior to slip when throttle is applied.
Freedom-Drive II: This system is an electronically controlled coupling, which is attached to the rear differential, is the heart of the Freedom Drive II system. The electronic control module processes signals from the wheel speed sensors and the accelerator pedal to determine how much torque to transfer to the rear wheels, then sends an electrical current to the ECC that is proportional to the amount of torque required. Recommended for true off-road situations including steep grades, wheel lift and rock or log climbing, the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package includes a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with a 19:1 crawl ratio that engages when the off-road mode is activated.
Quadra-Drive II: this active full-time 4WD system is the ultimate for virtually any driving situation. This system uses the Quadra-Trac II transfer case and Electronic Limited Slip Differentials in both axles, offering excellent tractive performance. Quadra-Drive II also features a 2.72 LOW-RANGE and NEUTRAL.
